P396K is a District 75 K-8 school, serving students with severe to profound disabilities that have been identified as having autism, severe cognitive delays, physical disabilities, sensory deficits, and/or are medically fragile, and who are functioning significantly below grade level academically, emotionally and socially. The integration of the arts into our teacher created curriculum and thematic-based learning are a few defining characteristics that make our school unique. This unique approach allows our students with diverse abilities multiple entry points to access learning to their fullest potential.
The arts are integral to unlocking the fullest potential of our students with diverse needs.
One of the greatest success stories during our dance programming was to see a student with cerebral palsy, progress from holding his hands tightly towards his body to eventually extending his arms, stretching his fingers and articulating his hands during our introduction to ballet classes. Sebastian is now able to hold an eating utensil and is working towards feeding himself independently because of his improved fine motor skills. These are just a few examples of why it is important for our students to have access to the performing arts.
My Project
These costumes and props are essential for our musical production of The Lion King. They will allow student to make a connection between our curricular studies of characters in the Africa Savanna.
These costumes and props will allow our students to learn about perseverance and self-esteem, two key skills to student success in and out of the classroom.
Formally working on these skills in a musical theater environment will also serve to support students in internalizing the self-regulatory behaviors taught in our school-wide Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program.
The instruments will allow our non-verbal students the opportunity to express their inner voices through music creation and exploration.
