My Students

The quotation, "The limits of my language means the limits of my word" could not ring more true with my speech and language students. Not only do my students have the challenges of speech and/or language delays, but for many of them, English is their 2nd language, making their struggles even harder.

My students tend to come from low-income households.

Many of them are English Language Learners that do not have the support at home to help them maintain a grasp of the English language. My students' exposure to English primarily occurs during school hours with relatively no reinforcement at home. These students also present with speech/language delays or disorders, making the help they receive in school critical.

My Project

Imagine reading a story or passage, and not comprehending what you have read. Imagine struggling so much with the reading of words themselves, that you can't process the information that is being presented. Imagine being in 3rd grade and not being able to read. Many of my students struggle with these challenges. The resources I am requesting target these challenges in a fun yet educational way. I have requested phonics games for my early readers and reading comprehension games for my students who have difficulty understanding and analyzing information they have read. These materials will help to provide my students with the therapy they need but in a way that they will enjoy.

As a speech-language pathologist, I want to provide my students with the best therapy possible, but make it a very enjoyable experience.

I want to keep my students enthusiastic about coming to "speech class" but ultimately get them to a place where they don't need my services any longer. I believe these materials will help me achieve that goal.
