Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What makes a child special? Their smile? The special way they have of showing you they are proud of their work while still looking "cool" in front of their friends? The way their hand slips into yours in the lunch-line because they still need reassurance? All of these things and a thousand more make my class special to me. They are a wonderful group of children that just need to know that the world is a welcoming place for people of different abilities and strengths. These kids are working so hard and are accomplishing so much.

Class 402 is an eclectic mix.

There are kids with special needs and there are kids who struggle with challenging life circumstances. There are doctors, and writers, scientists and artists in this class. There are gifted kids who can write a masterpiece about what they want to do in their future and others who can illustrate that masterpiece. Regardless of their abilities all of these children have talent. All they need is a chance, and Donors Choose and You, can be that chance!

My Project

Picture this: At one table a student chews on his pencil and wonders where to start. Next to him a little girl draws a vibrant picture full of color and details. Her creativity has taken her far beyond the classroom walls and into a world far beyond her dreams. At another table a young child struggles to hold a pencil, his knuckles white, he grips the pencil tightly, tongue sticking out as he diligently forms his words. This is a peek inside my classroom.

All of my students need different levels of support and the resources I've requested can help them on their way to becoming accomplished writers.

The pencil grips will help my students who are struggling with the basic skills needed to be able to write effectively. The folders will help students to organize their work.

Mark Twain said,“The difference between the almost right word and the right word is really a large matter, ’tis the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.”

I have worked with these students for a year already. I know their weaknesses and their strengths. During our year together I saw my students "catch the lightning bug." Joy, wonder and pride would light up their face when they shared their writing with me and their classmates. As the year progressed I saw those feeling evolve as they felt the power of the lightning bolt when they found the perfect words to take their work from acceptable to remarkable. As a teacher I felt true joy when one of my students said, "Ms. Loughran, I think I might be a poet." I think he might be right!

My next step is to create an environment where all students can feel that power. These supplies can help them accomplish that goal!

Thank you!
