My Students

We are starting the school year from home. While this is great because the focus is on the safety of our children and staff, it will be a huge disappointment to many students. They miss their friends and the social interaction that is an integral part of learning. I plan to set up opportunities for student-to-student connections so they can continue growing socially and emotionally while they participate in moderated literature circles online.

A literature circle is the equivalent for children of an adult book club, but with greater structure, expectation and rigor.

The aim is to encourage thoughtful discussion and a love of reading in students. I need 4-6 copies of quality, chapter books, for upper elementary students.

My Project

Distance learning started as an emergency in the spring, but I am finding ways to help my students stay connected and engaged. The books will be sent to students' homes and they will participate in online literature circles.

Having students work together in small groups to read and discuss literature is critical learning work that I do not have to eliminate when teaching remotely.

I like to use the Zoom platform to place my learners in breakout rooms. Students will be able to choose books that interest them, which will help them continue to enjoy their time reading.
