My Students

Our school is considered a Title I school, with many students living way below the poverty line and many parents holding 2 or 3 jobs. Many of these children go through more than any adults should have to and yet they are 11 - 12 years old. These kids are resilient yet remain kind and caring, they are leaders who want to learn. They take care of one another and protect one another and are brilliant while they face tremendous challenges.

Our school itself sits on the bottom floor of a luxury residential building surrounded by coffee shops and stores that our students can not afford, I would like to work towards leveling this playing field as these kids are bright, funny, caring, and worthy!

We also have a Horizon progam that services 6th, 7th, and 8th grade ASD students who we integrate into our general education program whenever possible. Our school believes in having a robust art department with dance drama, and visual arts. Our STEAM curriculum is authentic and our college-level habits start early with syllabus and majors becoming a part of our students' vocabulary in the first week of school.

My Project

Our school has a Horizon program within the school that has mastered integration in the least restrictive setting for our students who need the most support. The Horizon program is a specialized and intensive intervention program serving students with autism who experience a moderate degree of challenge with social, behavioral, and communication development. As the counselor in the school and ASD population, I studied what effective tools are available for teaching social skills to these students. I originally found social stories and visuals such as PECS, but these felt outdated and often didn’t teach students how to pick up on tone, facial expression, and other social cues we all take for granted, therefore I continued research until I found this book LEGO® Based Therapy- How to build social competence through LEGO® Clubs for children with autism and related conditions. Finally, an effective tool to teach complex social skills and prosocial expressive language to my ASD students! This year with all the students back in the building my development of the LEGO Club must happen, and this is why I NEED your help! These kids who already struggle with in-person interactions have been isolated behind a computer screen.

This social interaction of peers is a structured one, with rules for play and opportunities for language development.

We will have rules, permission slips, and reflective conversations about the social interactions that naturally occur through “LEGO play”. Students with internalizing symptomatology will be paired with externalizing symptomatology, these students will learn the prosocial behaviors needed in the outside world. However I need to develop the program myself, with no budget but my own pockets and ultimately I obviously need LEGOs, any help you can provide in this journey would mean so much to me and these kids.
