My Students

My students have intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities. Many of my students face health challenges due to the severity of their disability. Several of my students face additional struggles such as poverty or homelessness.

My students have an innate capacity for connection and self-expression in and through music experiences.

Through music, many of my students are able to more easily access communication and expression modalities that build their self-esteem, resilience, independence, and community involvement skills.

My students are learning pre-academic skills such as joint attention, attention to task, and following directions so they can be successful in the special education classroom as well as in mainstream classrooms. My students are also learning social emotional skills such as cooperation, calming, and coping skills, and kindness, so they can make and keep friends at school.

My Project

My students participate in music therapy 3-5 times per week. This year, we got our own classroom as a result of building construction and renovation. We are very excited to have a dedicated space.

A learning rug would enhance opportunities for focus, engagement, and learning in music therapy groups.

We would use this rug for music-based experiences that focus on academic skills such as identifying numbers, letters, and colors. We would also use the rug to provide students with social skills learning opportunities such as personal space, self control, and calming/coping skills. Finally, this rug would bring color and joy into our new classroom, making music therapy feel like a fun and safe place to go!
