Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What would the world be like if we had no access to the news? How would we know how to provide aid to Haiti after an earthquake, or to support firemen/police officers during 9/11? My students need nonfiction in their lives.

I have a wonderful class of 27 students thirsty for knowledge.

They are hands-on and visual learners, wishing to explore through experiments and everyday current events. Although we are one of the oldest schools in NY, we are grateful for the learning environment and materials we do have available. However, we have a shortage of nonfiction leveled readers available in our classroom for independent reading.

My Project

We are in the midst of initiating a new program through Teachers College for reading and writing. In order to truly offer students an engaging learning experience in the genre of nonfiction, we need nonfiction readers tailored to their independent reading levels. We are asking for leveled nonfiction reading books.

As a teacher, it is disheartening to know that the only thing preventing a child's success in learning is based on a lack of materials they don't have.

If we can't take these children out of where they live, then it's our duty to bring the world they are missing to their school. Nonfiction is about the world they live in everyday, but may not be aware of it. Help me bring the world to them.
