My Project

A favorite part of the day in our 3rd classroom is read aloud time. This is the time when my class gathers together, all with a book in hand, and students listen to a story being read to them. Reading aloud to students allows them to listen to a fluent reader, thus building their listening vocabulary. We work through a variety of comprehension activities after each chapter or section of our read aloud book.

"The Last Bear" is a story about an unexpected friendship that will change everything.

If we want kids to be good readers, we must help them fall in love with reading. One of the easiest ways is to read aloud great books.

"The Last Bear" is a touching, accessible middle-grade debut novel which takes place in the Arctic on an island called Bear Island. A girl named April and her father move to this island when her father takes a job for scientific research at an Arctic outpost for six months. They were told there are no polar bears left on Bear Island, but one night, April catches a glimpse of something bear shaped in the distance. This bear is alone, hungry, lonely, and a long way from home. April bonds with this bear and becomes determined to save her new friend- at any cost.

This book opens up a potential for a science connection with a polar bear unit, a science and social studies unit on the Arctic, and a science unit on protecting the planet.
