My Students

Our school is situated within the Urban Metropolis of Miami in Liberty City, which serves a lower-economic community with a more than three-quarters of its residences living below poverty level. I have the pleasure of working with a dynamic group of English language learners originating from 10 countries in grades 9 through 12.

A large percentage of my students have been in the United States less than six months; many of them do not speak English.

These unique learners continuously put forth a willingness to acquire the English language and have a motivation to learn.

My Project

With the development of Common Core Standards in high schools, students have been challenged with above-level vocabulary in core areas of math and science.

Students who are simultaneously learning English are often frustrated and unwilling to attempt to interact or define higher-tiered words in academic core areas such as science and math.

The technology materials I have requested will enhance my students ability to identify academic vocabulary in an efficient manner while learning or involved in classroom activities. Ultimately my students level of motivation will increase as their level of independence in work knowledge increases in Math and Science.

With the use of Surface tablets while in math and science class, students will be able to utilize Word, translation apps, or digital programs to assist in acquiring a clear understanding of the language while engaged in learning activities. Additionally, the stylus that will accompany the Surface tablets will provide the opportunity for students to write directly on the tablet, providing authentic learning experiences while also accessing technology platforms.
