My Students

My students this school year are coming into the start of a new year with Mr. M. Their hopes are high that we will do some amazing project. A project to be remembered for the rest of their lives. One of the best aspects about being a teacher is that we are constantly evolving and trying to be the best model for our children. These students come from very loving and attentive families that obviously want the best for their child. As a sort of surrogate father, my hopes are to help my students develop their critical thinking skills and to help initiate a conversation about the responsibilities they have as privileged children of the United States of America.

I say my students are privileged, but in truth they come from lower socio-economic backgrounds.

The school itself is over 70% free or reduced lunch. In my particular class, I have 12 boys and 11 girls. A few children are African-American, some white, one child is originally from the Philippines, and the rest are Hispanic with the majority claiming Mexican heritage. Our town is known for growing tough kids who understand the value of hard work.

My Project

My students need to develop their critical thinking skills. They need to weigh their options. They need to think logically or at least begin to develop the skill.

Chess has proven to help students develop their thinking processes, and there is no better way than starting up a chess club.

The new Disney movie and the life of Phiona Mutesi is a testament to that. We need to help these kids and give them opportunities to think, and think for themselves as individuals freed from the shackles of the phone. The game of chess will help my students develop elope thinking skills.
