My Students

We are an inner-city school that serves a population of 80% free and reduced lunch. 35% of our students are ELL (English Language Learners). Like most children, our students have various study styles.

Many of my students have never played a game that wasn't on a gaming system or on an electronic device.

The ability to introduce my students to a historic board game is an experience that I am anxious to provide. As a bonus, hopefully students will gain the ability to concentrate on something for longer than 5 minutes on a video screen.

My Project

The addition of chess boards to my math classroom will allow my students to increase the ability to think critically, while playing a game. Students will utilize different strategies in an attempt to ultimately be crowned the 6th grade chess champion.

Dr. Stefurak, a cognitive neuropsychologist, stated that "chess instruction informs the mind and the emotions in such a way as to structure an emergent mental circuit where motivation and ability multiply to produce achievement in chess and school and life." The attention span for students with ADHD that play chess versus their peers with ADHD that do not play chess, has shown a ratio of 5:1 in recent studies.

My math students will utilize these chess boards on a daily basis in stations. On Fridays, students will have extended time to compete against other classmates in hopes of playing against me. Once they defeat the teacher, me in this case, their name will be added to the 6th Grade Chess Wall of Fame.
