My Project

The novel “Red, White and Whole” by Rajani LaRocca is a story based in the 1980s but is timeless. It is a story of a young 13-year-old girl that is toggling between two identities: her Indian culture and the American experience.

My students deserve a coming-of-age story they can identify with and cannot put down!

In these trying times, our student population has not yet had the opportunity to read a story that offers a hopefulness that is heartwarming, heartbreaking, and funny with a nostalgic flair of the 1980s. My students are glued to their screens watching TikTok and playing online games and are often stuck inside because they live in a city.

Every young person struggles to find out who they are. LaRocca offers a story that can apply to anyone coming-of-age.

Reading interest, fluency, and comprehension is at an all-time low. With this novel, I could engage the students in a way they have never experienced: music.

The story is in verse and navigates through complex topics like loss, identity, and change through a rose-colored lens from the 1980s. Chapters are entitled after iconic 1980s songs and will help ground my students in a way that will last a lifetime.

My students deserve to read a book they cannot put down.
