My Project

When someone is hungry, they are more likely to experience feelings of irritability and anger, often referred to as "hangry," due to the physiological changes in the body caused by low blood sugar levels, which can impact mood regulation and lead to increased negative emotions like aggression and frustration. Essentially, an empty stomach can contribute to a shorter temper.

I can’t even count how many times I’ve been with a student to de-escalate their emotions and behavior and I ask, “Have you eaten or drank water today?” And the answer is no.

While not an official diagnosis, being hangry is the angry or irritable feeling many people get when they haven't eaten. People respond differently to hunger, so getting angry doesn't happen to everyone, and it's not always experienced in the same way. Some people lash out, others feel frantic, erratic, sad, stressed, out of it, or emotional. Hanger may happen occasionally or it could be a regular thing every time you go too long between meals. I will be using snacks in my counseling office to be proactive in making sure students don’t become hangry, as well as for students in crisis that may have not eaten.
