Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Corona, Queens was a community majorly hit by the pandemic. As a Tier I school, working in a bilingual setting, my students who are majority Spanish speaking, struggle with reading and writing in their first language. It is my goal to expose them to rich texts, that are culturally relevant to their lives. Books that they can connect to and become inspired. These books will be modeled texts of which they can refer to in their own writing practice. I want to create a love for reading for my students in my classroom with books they will love to reread.
Access to books will continue to support and build a long term passion for reading.
Although my students have had their struggles in their journey to America, they are highly motivated to learn. Access to books that are culturally and linguistically diverse, where they can see themselves and their stories represented is my goal for our classroom. It is my core belief that all children deserve the right to be seen and heard. Often times because these families are low income they the lack resources and supplies to support their children's educational journey or build their own library.
My Project
My students will have access to these books in the classroom as well as to share their passion for learning with their loved ones at home. Our borrowing library is open for students to freely feel they are entitled to love reading and if they wish to read the book several times, then our mission is serving its purpose.
Feeling connected to linguistically and culturally diverse books promotes, metalinguistic awareness and pride in our bilingual learners.
I would never want to rob them the opportunity to embrace a book they love if they wish to take it home. As their teacher I will use these texts as mentor texts for books they can be inspired to mimic, as authors pull their interests as readers. In addition, I hope to inspire their reading fluency and comprehension by dramatizing the voices of the characters in these books which are mirrors to their lives. I hope to promote vocabulary expansion as they learn new words. This is my mission.
