Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My seventh and eighth-grade students are an exuberant bunch of teens who love to socialize and have fun. My students are diversity personified from painfully shy to audacious, from studious to silly, from spoiled to neglected, from being treasured to experiencing trauma.

The pandemic has hit them hard: their natural exuberance has taken a hit because they are isolated from their friends and teachers.

Many of them are developing anxieties that may potentially take years to overcome. Getting back to normal can't come soon enough—we need to mitigate the learning loss and social isolation they are currently experiencing. Unfortunately, many of them have lost close family members to COVID and are struggling with grief as well. Although I can't solve these problems, I can do my very best to provide my students with learning opportunities that will excite them and allow them to focus on better days ahead.

My Project

I'm so inspired by all the things I learned through the Maker Educator Collective at the Pathfinders conference this summer. This fall, I will be embarking on a new adventure and creating a new maker space at my new school. The maker space I'm envisioning for my technology classes will be a place where we can create stop-motion animations, design and print 3D creations, design and make t-shirts, record podcasts, make light-up greeting cards using copper tape and LED lights, and much, much more!

We have a great start already, with 30 new Macs, several 3D printers, a Cricut vinyl cutter, 3D pens, and other fabulous resources, but to take our maker space to the next level, I am hoping to provide heat transfer vinyl in many colors for our t-shirt designs, various Cricut tools, and copper tape and lights to help make circuits for our light-up creations.

To be a truly innovative experience, a maker space needs a lot of supplies! If you can help provide them, my students and I would be so grateful. Thank you!
