The Journey to Learning Starts Here!

My students need math and ELA workbooks to supplement the current curriculum and learn the skills they need to advance. They also need extra resources, such as Scholastic News and math and literacy manipulatives from Lakeshore.

My Students

My classroom consists of special education students, grades 3-5. The students in my classroom are students with learning and emotional disabilities. Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities.

A learning environment for a child with special needs should focus on presenting the material in a variety of ways.

My students require many different strategies to help them learn new information, including lessons that include visual, tactile, kinesthetic, and auditory teaching, large and small group work, and individual attention. In my classroom, students work on their own levels, at their own pace.

In order to have a functional classroom, my students require extra materials such as workbooks and manipulatives. Our school provides minimal resources in providing differentiated materials and students are not benefiting from these limitations.

My Project

Workbooks can be used in various ways to support learning throughout the school day. They reinforce skills students know and introduce new material that they need, all while teaching them to work independently. My class includes 3rd-5th grade special education students with a variety of disabilities and are learning on different grade levels. Our current curriculum works for general education students but my students need more differentiation! If my 3rd grader is on a kindergarten level, I need to be able to teach them at that level. As a special education teacher, I know how important it is to provide my students with a variety of resources to help them learn.

Workbooks that are academically stimulating, common core aligned, and fun.

While this seems like a simple need, workbooks would make a significant impact on the education of all of my students, regardless of their learning style. They would provide a simple and organized way to reinforce skills being taught in the classroom, increase independent reading and working skills, and make learning more fun and exciting!

A subscription to Scholastic News magazine will give my students the opportunity to get a weekly classroom news magazine that will motivate them to read. This will allow me to teach curriculum-based science and social studies topics with simple, predictable non-fiction and engaging pencil-friendly activities. Along with great workbooks and magazines, my students require a lot of hands-on learning as well. Hands-on manipulatives are a critical learning tool for students in all classrooms. Students can physically investigate a math problem to find a solution. Manipulatives help make an abstract idea a concrete concept.
