My Students

"Learning another language is not only learning different words for the same thing, but learning another way to think about things." -- Flora Lewis. Learning another language has been proven to open the minds of those learning it. High School, especially, is an important time to open the student's minds and encourage them to explore the world past their own town limits.

My students have an interest in Japanese that ranges from wanting to enjoy Anime to wanting to learn something that's just different from everything else.

They are engaged in the lessons and always have questions about how and why Japanese culture and language differs from our own. They come in excited about learning a new writing system and way of thinking. I'm always excited each year to see what new ideas and questions the students have.

My Project

A language classroom is not just another room, but a doorway to a larger world and I want my classroom to reflect that. I came into an existing program where most of the resources were old and out dated. I've tried making a few things here and there, but to actually buy what is needed is something that I cannot afford.

Students learn in different ways, not everyone is going to succeed listening to a lecture and going through flashcards.

I want to give all my students an opportunity to succeed in my classroom.

To get the students more familiar with writing with new characters and using new grammar I need white board supplies so we can practice writing daily.

Flashcards are a common item in the classroom, but seeing and touching things helps some connect the word to the object, so I want to have plenty of tactile things that I can't normally just bring into the classroom. It can be used not only to introduce the vocabulary, but later on when students start discussing things in more detail.

I have very few things on the walls with Japanese on them. I need charts, and posters, and other such things you see in Elementary classrooms to make sure the students are exposed to the language they are learning.

Many of these items are not readily available for Japanese specifically so I have to get what I can and alter them as needed. But being able to get them is the first step.
