The Invisible Child and Digital Arts

All children deserve equal access to the arts. In this age that includes digital arts, my students need a state-of-the-art laptop to express themselves.

My Students

As a traveling art teacher my students cheer when I come in the room carrying a box of art supplies. They know that for the next fifty minutes we are going to use our minds creatively. Even though we lost our art room to a space crunch we still have plenty of room for self-expression.

My school serves a population with a poverty rate of over 90%.

Just under 30% of our students are English Language Learners. There are many recent immigrants - some with little or no formal schooling or with interrupted formal education. It is not unusual for our students to be living with a grandparent or great grandparent instead of their parents. Many are in foster care. We also serve a total of five temporary housing sites, one of which is dedicated to families fleeing domestic abuse. The largest homeless shelter we serve is known by one word - Auburn. Auburn is infamous now due to a New York Times investigative story featuring Dasani, a middle school child residing there in squalid conditions with her family. My school serves the elementary level students who live at Auburn. Despite daunting conditions our school has consistently rated top scores - we've been rated "A" for the last three years. We know our students' needs and serve them well.

My Project

Even though many of my students are residing long term at Auburn in heart-breaking conditions, when we are together we create a beautiful space using our imaginations. My students have consistently received recognition for their creativity. We no longer have an art studio and I am not able to work digitally with my students. Digital Arts can include photography, animation, graphic and web design, computer game design and 3D modeling. Of course all of these should be taught in a complete arts education. A laptop would make this possible. We have already started making clay forms for a claymation animation. The best we can do at the moment is taking a few pictures with my phone camera and emailing them to myself to print at the drug store. Having a laptop would give my students instant access to animation software. Access to a laptop during art would provide an opportunity for students to explore and express themselves within a digital modality.

A laptop would be a big step in the direction of digital parity for my invisible children.

Digital parity would make it possible to integrate the arts for Common Core Curriculum support. Providing them the opportunity for digital expression with a laptop would allow students to work from the base of their innate strengths. My students deserve to the same opportunities as other kids their age despite the fact that many of them have the misfortune of living under adverse conditions.
