Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

About My Students

After Joel, Joshua, and Jesus watched Think It Up on TV, they were very excited about doing a student led project.

The Hour of Code is soon approaching. As part of Google CS First club, they wanted to do something different. That's where the robots, Dash and Dot, came in to play. They want to program robots with the Galaxy Tab 4 instead. Once they learn all about the robots, they will be presenting for the Hour of Code.

Part of Computer Science is problem-solving. Over 44,000 jobs are open in this field and only under 2,000 graduate with a Computer Science degree in Texas (according to Code.org). That is, less than 5% of Computer Science jobs have the potential of been filled.

In Their Own Words

Our goals for this project are to use our computer programming knowledge on the Dash and Dot robots. It will help us learn the fundamentals of coding. We will use the Galaxy Tab 4 robots to write code for Dash and Dot, navigate mazes, and collaborate with our peers. Besides learning how to code we will be able to cooperate on problem solving by challenging each other on how to program the Dash and Dot robots to run on mazes.

We will bring this project to life by downloading the apps that go along with the robot. Then we will be able to control Dash and Dot. We can use the Path app to control Dash and have it run around the room or make it run mazes. We could use our coding knowledge to use the Blockly app and make Dash and Dot interact with sounds or with each other. The Dash and Dot robots will help us develop our collaboration and communication skills. This will cultivate our skills for today’s world.

This project is important to my classmates and me because code powers our digital world. Every website, smart phone app, computer program, calculator, and even microwave relies on code in order to operate. This makes coders the architects and builders of the digital age. Over the next 10 years it is estimated that there will be 1.4 million jobs in computer science and only around 400,000 graduates qualified to do them and we want to be part of those 400,000 graduates.
