My Students

Michael J. Fox said,"If students don't learn the way we teach, then maybe we should teach the way they learn." My at risk students with low reading levels are struggling with basic science concepts and skills because they lack a hands on component.

My students are at risk for failing, both in school and in life.

They are from a low socioeconomic background, come from broken homes, travel a great distance to come to a "choice" middle school in New York City and are below grade level in most, if not all content areas. They are young, eager 6th graders who want nothing more than to find academic success and break the cycle of failure. My students crave positive reinforcement and celebrate even the smallest accomplishment. They are typical 6th graders who want to learn by being active and doing. They deserve to experience a complete science laboratory experience with hand on activities.

My Project

My students will be given the opportunity to have a hands on laboratory experience where they will measure mass. They will be able to compare and contrast the mass of various objects. Students will be able to hypothesize the mass of various everyday objects and then calculate the actual mass and compare their guess to the result. They will learn by trial and error as they move riders to find the mass. The importance of accurate measurements will become apparent when we apply this skill to real world situations. We can "go shopping for a gold bracelet" where a small difference on the triple beam balance can make a big difference in price. Determining the mass of an object on a 2 dimensional worksheet is not sufficient My students need the hands on experience. After mastering the skill of determining mass, my students will build on this knowledge by learning how to calculate an object's density.

Having enough triple beam balances for student lab groups will make a huge difference in my classroom.

They will gain much needed knowledge by doing hands on activities. My students struggle tremendously with decoding, reading and comprehending; therefore actual hands on measuring of mass is a necessity for them to learn. They do without so much, they deserve some basic laboratory equipment.
