My Students

When people ask me what grade I teach and I tell them middle school, I am generally met with replies such as, "God bless you!" or "Wow, you must have A LOT of patience!" The truth is, I love being a middle school teacher. Yes, they can definitely be challenging at times, after all, that's a challenging stage in their development, however, they are also so curious and inquisitive, which makes my job a lot more fun and interesting. In addition to having fun in my classroom, I also find what I am doing so much more rewarding because I teach ICT classes.

Having the chance to help students who might be struggling a little more than their peers has always been something I am passionate about.

Seeing their faces when they master a skill or concept that has always been more difficult for them, being able to witness that "a-ha moment," is the reason that I do what I do. That being said, I am always looking for ways to improve my teaching practices using new methods or technologies that can help my students succeed.

My Project

Working with an ICT population can be very challenging as a teacher. There are so many different types of learners at so many different reading and writing levels that designing effective lessons and activities can be difficult. However, one thing that I have always noticed across the board with these students is the importance of modeling and providing examples. The more I can "show" my students, the easier it is for them to understand standards and expectations.

When students get to share their own work with the class, it's so much more authentic and effective than sharing my work with them.

This is why a document camera is such an integral part of my classroom. While conducting writing workshops, I like to take student work and SHOW my students how to revise and edit effectively. With a document camera they can see exactly what corrections need to be made as we are making them together. When reading from a novel, I like to be able to SHOW my students how to effectively annotate a text. With a document camera they can see the note taking that is happening with the novel as it happens.

These are things that are very difficult to do without the use of a document camera. A document camera would provide my students with the opportunity to see HOW to revise and edit, or annotate in real time as I am walking them through the process. This would, in turn, give them a better understanding of how to do these things on their own.
