My Students

I have an amazing group of students in my classroom. What makes them special is not only their individual personalities but their ability to navigate through their academic day with a variety of learning hurdles. I am able to teach them because I recognize their importance and abilities in the classroom and the world. As the school community outside of our classroom continues to become more and more diverse, I want to continue to be able to provide the best education not only for my students but all students whom I encounter.

Part of my role as an educator is to provide students with opportunities in education that stems from a holistic approach and love.

As a supporter of anti-racist education, it is also important for students to access education from an equitable lens. Located in Washington DC, my students are not only able to interact with individuals and students who are unique from them, but they can learn and exchange individual experiences.

My Project

Anti-racist education describes the act of dismantling systems of oppression in educational and organizational systems. It is a phrase that has been implemented into schools as of late, and while there is much more to its definition, establishing an anti-racist culture is needed. To fully be able to understand, address, and complete the work that is required in addressing anti racist education, one has to fully come to terms with the meaning.

This project will provide me with the immediate and future resources needed to develop a better sense of understanding of how to support anti-racist education.

Further, it will allow me an opportunity to perfect my teaching craft as I prepare for my next role in education. Yes, the conversations will not be easy. However, the conversations must occur. I teach in a very diverse school in which cultural diversity is reflected inside of our school as well as in the community. The resources in this project will allow me to deepen the critical consciousness of not only myself and my colleagues, but to my students as well.

Humanizing Research: Decolonizing Qualitative Inquiry With Youth and Communities will allow me to examine research on underrepresented youth and communities who are marginalized by systems of inequalities. It is my goal to use the research presented in this book to further bring about a positive social change with education. Ghosts in the Schoolyard: Racism and School Closings on Chicago's South Side addresses public school education in inner cities and addresses issues with budgeting, staffing, and resources that prevent schools from succeeding.

It is my goal to continue to promote racial equity through my teaching pedagogy. Hopefully, you will see the benefits of these resources as well!
