Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are a diverse group of boys and girls with amazing personalities that blow us away every day. Our students live in the heart of a bustling urban center. They are primarily African-American and Latino. We are a special needs public school. We have students from all over our city who attend some of our special programs.

All of my students have special needs, many are diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder and/or Multiple Disabilities.

Their communication skills range from non-verbal to just needing a few pragmatic tweaks. They are learning to communicate in their own ways as they learn not only life skills but academics as well.

My Project

I love doing art projects. My students need large grip and more varied basic art supplies to be able to participate in projects that will elicit speech and language skills.

Many of my students also receive OT service and find it difficult to utilize traditional art materials.

I want my students to be able to experience art projects without always having hand over hand support to use the materials.

Art is a great way to elicit specific vocabulary and grow language and communication skills. I want to take full advantage of the rich language around the arts.
