My Students

Do you remember spending endless hours building and creating a world with your friends using blocks and Legos, or perhaps playing a friendly competition game? Now, you have the chance to bring that same sense of excitement to many students.

I am a first grade teacher teaching in a low-income neighborhood.

My school is composed of new immigrants from China and families with low-income. Families in this community rely heavily on schools to help broaden their children's experiences and interests. Parents work long hours simply to make ends meet and rarely have time to take their children to explore the world beyond the hectic confines of their homes. Moreover, parents barely make enough money to make ends meet, let alone buy toys to stimulate their children at home. Many of my students never owned blocks or Lego's or even have play dates with friends; instead, they watch endless hours of television at home.

My Project

These various building blocks and games will enhance my students' creativity and help them learn important social skills during playtime. “Zoob” challenges students to recreate designs using various shapes and allows them to enhance the designs. With “Gears”, students design their own creations that boost their spatial reasoning and math skills through creative play. Foosball, Air Hockey, Speed Ball, and “Hungry, Hungry Hippo” are all games that teach the importance of sportsmanship. All these tools have unique functions and purposes that focus on specific dexterity and social skills which regular lessons cannot teach. Some of these building sets extend math concepts learned in the classroom. These different building sets and games will allow students to explore their creative juices, hone their motor, thinking and social skills, and also great for cooperative group students activities; all vital life skills for achieving success.

You will make it possible for my students to apply their knowledge through a hands-on activity that helps them to explore, create, and socialize with others and achieve success outside of the classroom.

The resulting feeling of success will also instill in them the confidence to persevere academically.
