My Students

The humble worm knows the importance of good fresh produce and good garden soil. We in the inner city are just learning the wonders of growing fresh produce. I hope to bring this movement of urban farming to the high school classroom. My students live in neighborhoods where fresh produce is scarce.

My students come to us from low income backgrounds and often come to school hungry, having eaten "hot chips and a soda" for breakfast.

School lunches are not much better. Most of California is rich in agriculture, but growing up poor in the city means having a diet high in fat, sodium and sugar. When I bring big salads to school my students often ask me to share with them. I want to do this and more. Give a man a fish and he can eat for a day, teach a man to fish (in this case garden), and he can eat for a lifetime. Our high school is a small, but is trying to make big changes in the lives of the inner-city students we serve. I believe that this begins with what we feed our kids. Growing our own food and providing a salad bar at school could have a huge impact on students' readiness to learn. Helping our students to feel better and to eat healthier food, contributes to the success we are having in creating a small high school that cares for each student holistically.

My Project

My students need four Plant Growth light fixtures for an indoor grow lab. We will use this indoor grow lab to grow lettuce, herbs and greens to be transplanted to an outdoor garden. Students will learn composting, seed propagation, creating rich soil that is teaming with life, transplanting and caring for the garden straight through till harvest time. We will collaborate with the Free Farm, a local urban farm that provides neighborhood residents with free food, nutrition and gardening education. Students will participate in urban farming and in the community building act of sharing the harvest with neighbors.

Food scarcity, especially food which is highly nutritional, is a big issue in the urban communities our students live in. If students are hungry and malnourished, they are less likely to be ready for meaningful academic work. You will help us address a problem in a holistic and innovative way. This project will teach children about health, botany and social studies, and still be yummy!
