My Students

I am a 5th grade teacher of two remedial Reading classes.

Our school is located in a low-income school located in one of the largest school districts in this country. Over 95% of our school's diverse population receives free or reduced lunch. Poverty is high, and parent involvement is low.

My Project

I refuse to believe that the reason parent involvement at our school is low is because parents don't care. Even after countless unanswered requests for parent conferences, unanswered phone calls, and wrong numbers, I refuse to give up on finding a way to have our parents become actively involved in their child's education. When I first decided to try Friday Folders I was instantly met with criticism; "You will never get them back", "The parents won't sign them", etc. I tried anyway, sending home simple communication folders every Friday and hoping for the best. Week after week the folders came back signed and with comments from parents. It worked. It was an easy and consistent way to keep parents involved. Now, I want to take it a step further and create more interactive communication folders. To accomplish this, I am requesting two class sets of folders, a variety of labels to keep the folders organized, and clear pockets to attach to the folders for work samples and important papers

Research has shown that when parents, teachers, and community members work together, students achieve more.

This is regardless of socioeconomic status, ethnic/racial background, or parents' level of education. Additionally, student achievement for disadvantaged students improves dramatically. Through donations to this project, you will help promote educational success for low income students through increasing parent involvement.
