Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
My students are emergent bilinguals who read, write, speak, sing, and dream in both Spanish and English. They approach life with wide-eyed, optimistic amazement, and are just as excited to engineer a bridge out of toothpicks and tape as they are to hunt down the week's phonics pattern.
All of my students are immigrants or the children of immigrants, and they have limitless potential.
They also face linguistic, economic, and cultural challenges.
Our school works to harness students' curiosity by working in a workshop model, with daily opportunities for students to pursue their own inquiries, build on their existing skills, and connect their learning to their home culture.
My Project
My students are becoming stronger and stronger readers in both English and Spanish, and they need more high-interest books to continue their progress. These early chapter books will help them build their reading muscles--noticing character traits, following characters through multi-episode plots, and tracking the clues that authors weave into stories.
I've chosen this mixture of series books because, in addition to their familiar settings and kid-friendly mysteries, they feature Latino, Asian, and Black characters.
Only 13% of children's books written in the past 24 years feature non-white characters, but 100% of the kids in my class are children of color. All kids deserve to see themselves reflected in the books they read.
