My Students

My students are high achieving and curious, mostly (95%) African Americans in a city high school. Our school is a magnet high school, which means students must apply to get in.

The focus of our school is environmental studies; although we are within the boundaries of a large city, our campus is surrounded by open land, deer and peace.

Our students have planted over fifty trees on the property, created an extensive vegetable garden, the produce of which goes for free to their communities, built a greenhouse and an outdoor classroom; maintained a system of hydroponics herbs growing in the school; begun boiling down our bees' wax to make lotions and unguents to sell.

We are part of the School District of Philadelphia, which, like many urban districts, has been squeezed for funds for years, during which we have lost our field-trip bus allowance and a lot of other discretionary funding. Lankenau has an extremely hard-working and dedicated staff, all of whom try to make up for the loss of funds and materials by any means necessary.

My Project

After reading the novel "The Hate U Give," students will discuss and write about the topics of racism in the United States, police brutality and how community can stand together against threats both from the larger society and from within.

This social justice work will be greatly enhanced by students seeing the movie "The Hate U Give", which I previewed with other educators this week.

It's an amazing and beautifully done film, with almost too many themes and issues, all very real, all carefully and evenly considered. I loved it, even though it differs from the novel in several ways, and I think it will be inspirational and motivational for students.
