My Project

Perspective is everything. In English, we teach our students to examine multiple points of view when developing arguments and analyzing evidence. However, our current book depository does not reflect the diversity of voices that shape our world. To address this gap, we hope to add Purple Hibiscus by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood into our class rotation.

These two novels provide powerful female narratives that will deepen students' understanding of gender, power, and personal agency.

Purple Hibiscus, which will be introduced in our 9/10 combination classes, offers a coming-of-age story centered on Kambili, a young Nigerian girl navigating familial oppression, religious extremism, and personal growth. Through her voice, students gain insight into the struggles of young women in patriarchal societies, as well as the impact of political instability on personal identity. The novel’s rich cultural context and accessible yet profound prose make it an excellent entry point for younger high school students to engage with themes of resilience and self-discovery.

For our seniors in AP Literature, The Handmaid’s Tale presents a dystopian lens on female oppression and autonomy. Atwood’s novel challenges readers to consider the intersections of gender, politics, and societal control, making it a relevant and thought-provoking addition to our curriculum. Through Offred’s narration, students will analyze the dangers of totalitarianism and the historical echoes that make the novel so impactful.

By including these texts, we are not only broadening our curriculum to better represent female perspectives but also providing students with the critical tools to engage with literature that reflects the complexities of power, resistance, and identity.
