Poker, cussing, revenge- what more could a high school student ask for in a novel? “The Hand You’re Dealt” provides all three of these components, along with lessons of loyalty, trustworthiness, and overcoming adversity. I teach eleventh grade English at a poverty-stricken school in the Arkansas Delta. All students here receive free lunch, and several charities provide free uniforms for the many students who cannot afford school clothes. Teachers receive no supply stipend, and nearly all provide a constant flow of basic supplies such as pencils, pens, and paper to the students in our school. English teachers are faced with the additional task of supplying novels for our classrooms. Beyond stocking a classroom library, any novel we choose to teach we must obtain on our own. From previous generous donations to DonorsChoose.org, my classroom received 10 copies of the novel “The Hand You’re Dealt.” My homebound and credit recovery students have LOVED this novel. I’m so excited the students enjoyed this novel that I’d like to share it with my other students. With a class set, I’d be able to use “The Hand You’re Dealt” to engage my reluctant readers, and prepare them for the impending end-of-course literacy exam (and life beyond high school)! More so, my goal within this unit is to inspire my students to rise above the hard-feelings and anger they feel towards their current situation. By overcoming these obstacles, my students are more likely to complete their education and move forward to college and other higher-education experiences. Your donation will make it possible for my students to increase their interest in literature and improve their literacy scores, as well as improve their chances of rising above their difficult circumstances to move on to college.
