The Greatest Villain?

My students need 120 copies of "Othello" as part of our year long study of heroes and villains. What better hero to study, than Iago? One of the greatest villains in literature.

My Students

Help us in our study of heroes and villains! Our school just opened last year, and unfortunately with the budget crisis we did not receive the promised first year funds to by novels for our English classes.

My students attend an inner-city public school in a high poverty area.

The majority are from families new to the country and do not speak English at home. They do not have a great deal of access to books or other cultural experiences. Our school is working to build a college-going culture, trying to challenge all students in our full-inclusion classrooms.

My Project

Our school has a social justice focus, thus we have spent a good part of the year studying heroes and leaders in both the English and World History classes. Now it is time to look at the darker side, while also providing my students with their greatest reading challenge to date--a Shakespearean play. I hope to engage students with a study of Iago by having them write updated scripts that show how the same story is still relevant today.

Too often you read that inner-city students aren't challenged enough in their classes and aren't prepared for college.

I have told my students this will be their greatest challenge this year and that we will work together to access the text. In trying to build a college-going culture it is important that we have materials to challenge students so that they can believe that they have the skills to read difficult materials.
