This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

"To send a letter is a good way to go somewhere without moving anything but your heart," -Phyllis Theroux. Hello there! My 6th graders will soon embark on our mail writing unit, where the kids will learn how to write a friendly letter and send it through the U.S. Postal Service. Our project, The Great Mail Race, requires students to research a state, discover two elementary schools within that state, and write a friendly letter asking questions about their school dynamics. Students will reflect on their own classroom experiences here in Chicago and compare them to different schools across America. Students will present their findings and hopefully hear back from the schools they contacted!

Because the cost of envelopes and stamps have skyrocketed, my hope is that these resources can be donated to us.

I would love nothing more than for my students to walk to our local mailbox this spring and drop off the letters that they worked hard on. Pulling the mailbox lever open is an experience that no child forgets, and I would love for them to experience it through The Great Mail Race!
