My Students

It was William Styron who said, "A great book should leave you with many experiences, and slightly exhausted at the end. You live several lives while reading." My students have a big appetite for new experiences and The Great Gatsby can give them that.

My students are ambitious juniors working towards one common goal: a college education.

All my students represent minorities and are living below the poverty line. Most will be first generation college students and while they are very excited for the opportunity, they take that responsibility very seriously. They are very grateful for their education and the opportunity they have to learn and work daily to accomplish their goals.

My Project

I am requesting 30 copies of "The Great Gatsby" to improve literacy and cultural understanding. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a classic American novel and part of the canon of great literature. This novel will strengthen their analytical, synthesis, and analytical writing skills. The prose and thematic content of The Great Gatsby create a rich literary experience that all students should be exposed to during their high school education.

As a small and new charter school, we do not have many of the resources that large public schools do.

We do not have a student library and few students can afford to buy numerous books. Exposure to the classics, like The Great Gatsby, is a given for many but may be unattainable for my students. If I can provide the literature for my students, they will be able to read, learn, and grow as every child deserves.
