Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I'm so lucky to be able to teach the amazing students at my school, and I want to give them every opportunity to succeed, both in high school and in college or the workforce after. My debaters will use the timers in their debates and speeches, and the gavel for the Congressional and World Schools debating we do in class and at tournaments. Being able to color code and match their legal pads, timers, notes, and speeches helps with organization, identification, and frankly some extra visual interest on material that can often be quite dry. All students - debate and AP Literature - will be able to make excellent use of the pens, pencils, markers, and colored pencils to create work that has meaning for them in a way that all have access to. The chair, or The Serious Chair as it is known in my classroom, will serve all students who have important thoughts to share, or concerns they want their classmates to hear and take seriously. Our old Serious Chair is on its last legs, literally, and I want to make sure the kids get to keep the strong visual representation of their ability and willingness to speak.

My students are focused, driven, clever people who take very seriously the work of building and maintaining a winning debate program and preparing for college.

I've noticed that adding color to their academic lives brings an extra bit of joy and creativity to the learning process, and the students benefit from it in so many ways. Some love to color code everything; some thrive on doodle notes or adding illustrations to their work; all of them deserve to have regular access to quality materials to help them spark their imaginations and fully engage their whole mind.
