Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
"Piglet noticed that even though he had a very Small Heart, it could hold a rather large amount of Gratitude." I want to gift 150 students in 1st - 5th with a summer journal. They took my challenge to create a list of 100 things that make them happy, and I want them to add to it over the summer.
Our Title 1 school with 70% free and reduced lunch count has an amazing group of children!
They are a diverse group coming from a variety of backgrounds. Our dedicated staff work hard each day to not only insure that these students are having their academic needs met but also the social, emotional and physical needs that make up the whole child. We have extended hours for a homework club and a city recreation program as well as computer labs open early for support in math and reading skills. We have a mentor program, student leadership opportunities and counseling groups to offer support for broken families, grief, and coping skills. One of my goals is to help children learn how to be grateful for what they do have and to understand that gratitude can become a way of life.
My Project
I want to reward these students for their perseverance by giving them a journal so they can continue to work on their gratitude lists through the summer months. I want them to be able to continue to develop that attitude of gratitude in their lives.
I plan to come back together at the start of next year and share our writings from the summer. I want to have this group reach out to others at our school and encourage them to start a list of their own possibly pairing them with students to show them how they were successful creating their list of 100 things.
I want my students to have the opportunity to continue a project they started during the school year.
I want them to make the connection that what they learn in the classroom can continue outside of the classroom. These children may not have much by way of material things but if they can come to realize that a grateful heart allows them to be open to the many possibilities life holds for them then they will thrive.
