Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have been teaching elementary school in The South Bronx for seven years and for seven years I have been cobbling together basic art supplies from stuff I buy, stuff I get from my school, which is minimal, and stuff I pilfer from my home, where my kids have mostly outgrown crayons, markers, etc. I have a Fairway Bag (local NYC grocer, noted for their unusually strong plastic bags) full of what can only be described as crayon nubs. I have a smaller purple plastic bag filled with an assortment of markers, of varying sizes, colors and thicknesses, all in varying states of dryness. Is it the end of the world that my students have to survive on Crayola stumps and, for the last two years, no markers? No, it's not. As usual, they don't even know they're deprived. Recently I was in a summer school in the suburbs and I saw the most amazing thing (not counting the white board that projects computer images.) It was a class set of crayons-a vast collection divided by colors-the kind of crayon set that will last me my next seven years in teaching. While crayons, markers and clay may not seem like educational essentials, let me make a brief case for their value. My students are third-graders about to face their first state tests in English Language Arts and Math. In The South Bronx we operate, by necessity, in a world where the tests are everything and art is, at best, an afterthought. Unlike other places, we face a minute-to-minute daily struggle to help as many kids as possible clear the state hurdles, the first of which is The ELA (English Language Arts Test) in early January. Nonetheless I have tried every year to bring as much art and music into my classroom as possible. Art provides sheer unalloyed joy for kids who are doing heavy work practically all the time. Whether it's creating dioramas of favorite books using clay, illustrating their own writing with markers or using crayons in math to explore symmetry and sets, there are countless opportunities during a school year to inject art (and fun) into the daily curriculum. In past years I have had an artist visit the class to demonstrate the simple act of blending colors with crayons--something kids never intuitively do, but will do incessantly once they see how it works. Last year I literally did not have enough crayons to do that lesson. If I have a fresh supply of crayons, markers and clay, I will make sure that kids (they're only 8 years old!) will be using them all the time, not just this year but for many years to come. Thank you for your consideration.
