My Students

The majority - nearly 80%, of the students at my school, come from low-income homes and are dealing with some sort of trauma in their lives, yet they do not let that stifle their spirit. Many of my students see school as their safe space and desire an engaging education in a welcoming environment.

My students have such high hopes and aspirations for their future and I want to do everything in my power to help them achieve those dreams.

I constantly emphasize the importance of a good education and a solid understanding of the English content area in order to achieve those goals and dreams. Students in my class know that their outcome will reflect the work they put in and will hopefully carry this though to their life outside of school.

My Project

With such large class sizes and a wide variety of learners, I need to make sure all of my students can access and engage with the material in a variety of ways. I like to utilize many types of media and include lots of videos and music and audiobooks in my lessons; unfortunately, having only the speaker on the computer makes it difficult to share these things as a class. A loud portable speaker will transform my classroom and allow all students the opportunity to interact with the different aspects of my lessons.

Many of my students read far below grade level and depend on my ability to differentiate for each student in order to change this.

One of the skills I focus on with my students is their reading comprehension and this has to be done in a variety of ways for each one. When giving them a variety of articles or poems or stories to engage with, a large number of my students benefit from having the words read to them so they can focus on comprehending the content. A classroom set of headphones will allow all students to experience different sets of reading material in this way at the same time without distracting one another with the noise.
