Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is comprised of over 70% low-income students comprised of a wide variety of reading comprehension levels. Students frequently cannot afford their own resources but are too embarrassed to let teachers and other support staff know that they cannot acquire the necessary materials to be competitive academically. Students love the new books I provide each year and can't wait to see what I bring back to the class from my trips all year.

My students have demonstrated an exceptional appreciation for the materials I provide personally and through DonorsChoose.org.

We will be considering Romeo and Juliet in our English II classes but the students have struggled with the Shakespearean language and this is in part because they are ELL students. I would like to provide more accessible versions of the texts in my classroom.

My Project

Students in my class often struggle with Shakespearean language. Often students groan as soon as a teacher introduces a Shakespearean work and it is frequently because they struggle with learning a second language, let alone Shakespearean language. It is imperative that students be exposed to Shakespearean works because, throughout their education, other literary works that they will be expected to analyze will allude to Shakespeare's works. Also, ELL students benefit greatly because many of our idioms are derived from Shakespeare's works.

As students mature in their English language usage, this is another way we can support their efforts by making Shakespearean works accessible.

Students have an opportunity to experience success while analyzing a previously difficult work and this motivates them to work harder and look at literature in a more positive manner.

It is our department's goal to make sure that all of our students are exposed to Shakespeare's works every year of their secondary education, at a level that is accessible to all. Our students often come away from their first experience with Shakespeare, in our classes, expressing a very positive outlook about how much they actually enjoyed the Shakespearean work.

In the past, students have been exceptionally grateful for and respectful of the materials procured through DonorsChoose and they are so happy to receive new books. I still have students come up to me and express how happy they were that I helped them to enjoy Hamlet. One of my students, who previously "hated reading" came up to me this year, before graduation, and wanted to tell me how much he loves Shakespeare and that Hamlet is his favorite. DonorsChoose made this possible and I want to continue this for future generations.
