Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a large underfunded Title I urban public school in New York City. The majority of our students are immigrants from very diverse backgrounds and improvised communities. Our school community consists of students from the Dominican Republic, Bangladesh, West African, and Latin America. More than half of our student population is learning English as a new language and classified as students with disabilities. Our school’s funds have been dramatically decreased due to budget cuts throughout the DOE. The only ones suffering these unfortunate cuts are our students.

I am a 2nd year special education ELA teacher of 90 students who are growing up in the same impoverished neighborhood I did as a child.

My students are so full of life and look forward to every lesson they are given and every book they read no matter their circumstances. They are hardworking, motivated, smart and caring children who deserve chance at a well rounded education.

My Project

I work with students from all walks of life in a Title I public school that has become underfunded. Books have become my students' only escape and piece of hope from their lives outside of school. These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library is a place that my students really enjoy - they complete work there, and they read independently! Every student book that is placed in my library is treated with love and care, and they are thankful for the opportunities to read. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind-I have watched them the past few weeks of school read titles just like these, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time.

With these new books, students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade levels.

They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
