This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Let's start from the very beginning. A very good place to start. When you read you begin with ABC, when you sing you begin with Do, Re, Mi." How many of you remember learning the basic scale through the amazing film "The Sound of Music." Help us do the same for our Kindergarteners.
Our Kindergarten students consist of English Language Learners, Transitional Kindergarteners, and students with Individualized Educational Programs (IEP).
For many of them they have just started their first school year experience and they are ready to take on the world of Kindergarten. A huge part of their learning happens through songs, poems, and chants. We are extremely fortunate to receive a vocal teacher once a week, however our school has absolutely no musical instruments to help him enrich his lessons. Every year when we are assigned a vocal teacher the first thing they want to see is the instruments we have available. Every year we tell them that our school has none because we simply don't have any money available for purchasing musical instruments. Sometimes they are able to borrow from another school but most of the time we do without. Our little ones have to simply learn songs and the basics of music with Cd's and body movements.
My Project
Using tangible items such as musical instruments will help students learn about keeping a steady beat, rhythm, and tempo. We will be able to broaden their musical experience and our vocal teacher will be able to enhance his lessons. The students will also have an amazing time using these instruments in other subjects such as science and social studies. We will be able to bring to life patriotic songs such as "Yankee Doodle" and learn about how sound travels.
Learning about dances from different parts of the world will be exciting.
No longer will we have to disappoint our vocal teacher when we tell him that we don't have any musical instruments. No longer will our vocal teacher have to ask other schools to lend us their instruments. Now we will be able to truly enjoy the gift of song and make our students first true musical experience magical. Our annual Winter Program and our Dance Around the World will be awesome.
