My Students
I am so thankful to work at ABES in southeast Washington, DC . This is my sixth year working with students that are in grades PreK 3/4, K-5th general education, special education, and students in the autism program. We are a Title 1/free lunch program that serves 500 students. Every year my goal is to make sure that my students develop a culture of reading. I do this by trying to help families with getting free books to develop their own at home libraries. My students read at school and in the library, but during the weekend or over long holidays it's important for them to continue to develop their love of reading, not just for school but for enjoyment as well.
My Project
My students read on a daily basis in the library or in class, however students that come from low-income families have a harder time purchasing new books or books to build their own libraries at home. Now that my school has over 500 students, it has been harder to receive free books for my students.
Every year before the winter break my goal is to make sure every student in my school receives a holiday gift bag with 1-2 books in each bag.
This is done during our annual “Family Literacy Night.”
During the literacy night, parents will have the opportunity to learn reading strategies and activities that are fun and interactive for their children.
Family Literacy Night is a great way for parents to help their children with improving their reading skills.
Students can also receive free books to build their own at home library that would increase their reading ability and vocabulary skills. The mission is to educate the students on becoming lifelong learners for the 21st century.
