My Students

My students are typically not the traditional college-bound students given the nature of my course load, but when given the right environment, their creativity and love of solving problems with hands-on solutions make teaching them an amazing experience.

My Project

After realizing that the students coming back into the more "normal" classroom after two+ years of emergency remote learning, hybrid learning, and a return to school with masks full time, I saw that my students would just disappear into a computer-based assignment. They would rarely engage with the class, their teacher, or their classmates. I began giving them more traditional assignments that required them to read from printed sources and write with pencil/pen on paper, while interacting with the class and their seatmates.

This worked exceedingly well, but from the teacher's perspective, reverting back to a system of having to keep track of and assess mountains of paper revealed just how much work digital assignments keep off of our plates!

I began experimenting with the Rocketbook app and custom Rocketbook enabled assignments that I print out on paper and distribute to students. They work as normal, but when it comes time to turn them in, the students use the app to scan the assignment - creating a digital PDF of it - which they then submit to our online Learning Management System, where it is automatically organized and accessible to me anywhere. A big plus is that even if my students misplace their work, they have a digital copy to access when referring back to their previous lessons.

I now want to take this a step further by creating custom unit workbooks with all of the student materials in them. By printing on waterproof paper and binding them myself with this binding machine in the project, I will be able to create reusable, scannable workbooks for my classes to use each semester. Students will simply write using Pilot Frixion pens, which are erasable, and will just need to wipe with a damp cloth to clean them and make them ready for the next class.
