My Students

My students are from a lower socio-economic area that is 100% free lunch. My class specifically is all English language learners who are making great gains in developing their vocabulary and their reading and writing. They are excited about all our different subjects and love to learn!

I want to create a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) center in my class and give my students exposure to different elements to encourage their interest in later years.

By creating excitment now for these subjects, hopefully they continue with enthusiasm for them as they continue school.

My Project

I want all my students to have experiences every day experimenting, hypothesizing, and making observations about different science and math and engineering activities. My students do not have access to these resources other than the classroom and I would love to see our classroom come alive with science and math experiments and centers! I would like to create a corner of my classroom where there will be directed teaching about STEAM but also times where students can work independently on projects. The science centers I have chosen all focus on problem-solving in a fun and exciting way, where students work together to create. I also have chosen math centers that reflect our curriculum and will give students more opportunities to practice. What I love about all these items is that students can work on them with or without teacher help and in groups. Ultimately, my goal is to have a full-blown STEAM lab in one corner of my classroom. They will be so prepared for the future with extensive experience in math and science and it cannot start too early. By exposing them early on to STEAM activities, centers, and projects (and a vacuum to clean up all the wonderful learning messes!) their problem-solving skills will be that much more advanced for future grades. They will be ready for anything!
