The Future is Past

Help me give my students an authentic learning environment that challenges them to take lessons from history and connect to them. Help me keep history relevant in a community that is traditionally ignored by those that make it.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Across the U.S., students ask their teachers, “why should I care about history?” As a knee-jerk reaction, teachers typically respond with some variation of “if we don’t understand our past, we’ll be doomed to make the same mistakes.” Kids have been hearing their teachers say this for years and it continues to backfire: They can’t tie history to a specific job type and don’t find it useful in the real world. While History studies have been under fire and remain a hot button topic for lawmakers due to conversations about grand narratives and identity, students seem detached from the materials and could care less about presidential terms, states' rights, stories of “good vs bad,” or “us vs them.” They care about how this matters to them. My students are largely Hispanic immigrants from low-income families and have a lot on their plates; however, I’ve found that a student is far more likely to listen to me “yap” if I draw direct connections between the lesson and their current realities and if applied in a way that is more in line with their skillsets.

History will become a thing of the past unless we learn to present it as THEIRstory.

So, in my list you will find a number of materials dedicated to the goal of providing my students with history lessons that hit benchmarks, prepare them for their exams, but that are also quirky and creative. With resources like a Cricut and a storage bin for art supplies, we can draw, paint, create banners, letters, timelines, 3D projects, and posters to visualize our work and connect to the material in a more visceral way while our new chair will become our "hot seat" for review games. In my class we talk about serious stuff, but we also have fun!
