Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This will be my first year as a 4th grade teacher, however, having worked at the school as a Student Teacher and a Student Support Assistant, I know how eager the students are to learn. Many of the students come from low income homes, some of which do not speak English.

The school I work at is one of the most diverse schools in Pennsylvania but only 33% of the students are proficient in reading.

Because of this I want to make sure that when my students enter my classroom they have all of the necessary resources to succeed. Whether its flexible seating or a diverse library, they should have access to suburban education in an urban setting.

I know that with help from DonorsChoose.org, we will be able to provide a classroom that helps our student thrive.

My Project

In two weeks my students will enter their classroom. For more than 5 hours these students will sit in their seats listening attentively in their hard seats. To us as adults, that may not seem like a big deal, sitting still for hours, however for students who are more inclined to move around this will be difficult. I truly believe that if a child is uncomfortable they will not be able to focus on the topic at hand.

Students should be able to learn in a space that is safe, engaging and equally comfortable.

Instead of punishing students who cannot stay still, let's encourage them to find a safe space to learn and possibly bounce!
