My Students

If we think about our own life, there are so many things we take for granted, like being able to pay our bills, go grocery shopping, ect, Many of the special needs high school students in my class are working at achieving some independence, including shopping, light housework, self care, etc.

My class is called Functional SCILLS.

It is located in Gilbert Unified School District #41, in Gilbert, Az. .The students I teach have Moderate Intellectual Disabilities and spend the majority of their day in my self-contained classroom. I provide the students with a hands on, concrete approach to learning, basic decoding ,and sight words skills for reading, functional math such as money and the value, written expression, pre-vocational skills and daily living skills. The focus is on functional academics and life skills that will help these students achieve there IEP goals and create some independence for them. Each students has their own specific learning needs as written in their individual IEP, and plans of training are derived from these specific needs. The overall goal is to bring them to their highest learning level possible, to enable them any independence possible, based on their individual learning potential.

My Project

The items Health & safety would give my students the opportunity to learn in a variety of different ways through more hands on activities. Shopping Money and Money Problem Shopping and Money Magic Board will teach, my students how to use money so they are able to purchase their own items, as well as help create more independence for them. The students are very limited in what they are able to do on there own, so a major part of our goals are focused on creating independence which then creates self-confidence and boost their self esteem. As with all children, my students each have their own preferences for ease of learning, and which methods work the best. Especially with students in a SKILLS, it is evident that they usually learn the best and retain the most when able to touch and feel items pertaining the learning experience. The particular items on my list would certainly fit into the activities and would be a benefit to my students in the activities throughout their day

I am very excited of the possibilities of having additional tools in my classroom, and a new variety.

The students will react ver positively to these new items, and I feel that their learning experience will be heightened. I will be able to create new activities to utilize these items to their fullest, which will, in turn, will help my student's interest in learning and continue to learn important daily skills that will promote success in there lives. The entire classroom will benefit.
