My Students

My library serves a population that is racially and ethnically diverse. Since we are near two military bases, we also have a significant number of military families.

At our school, we have students, particularly males who are in danger of failing the key academic areas of reading, science and math.

They often cannot find anything they want to read and research in the library. We need new books on hot topics.

If we do not do something now to capture the imaginations of these students they will probably become dropouts. The students who use my library are wonderful, inquisitive children. All of them qualify for free breakfast and lunch. The neighborhood public library branch closed recently and my students have limited access to books. We need these books.

My Project

Hey library lady, where are the new books? Who wants to read an old book with pages that are torn and falling out? My students are just learning to read and desperately need new books. I work with every student in my school. Each and every week, I teach library lessons and reading skills to students. I try to help students find the books and materials they need and want. Helping students learn to read independently is a joy. I firmly believe that reading is the cornerstone of learning. Trying to find students books that they WANT to read is not always easy. New books attract new readers. Readers stay in school. My students requested these fifty books. They want to read these books and take them home. The books are expensive and without the help of DonorsChoose, like you, my students would not have access to them.

Reading is the foundation of education and finding a book to read is crucial to success.

New books will spark interest and help prepare my students for success in high school and college. My students need these books now.
