My Students

The eyes have it! And, it’s important to keep those eyes safe during laboratory activities. The classroom is filled with young minds that appreciate activities that take them from their ordinary classroom experience in a search for the extraordinary.

My students are a great bunch of kids from a variety of backgrounds.

They are interested in science and are excited about understanding what makes them and the world around them work. Frederick Douglass Academy is composed of a collection of motivated and focused college-bound students who come from the neighborhoods all over the five boroughs of NYC. As a college preparatory school, FDA provides an opportunity for students to grow and mature into topnotch collegiate candidates. Many of my students know that the quality education available at Frederick Douglass Academy is an excellent way for them to improve the overall quality of their life.

My Project

Each student must complete a New York State required minimum of 1200 minutes of laboratory time. Many of our inquiry-based labs use glassware and/or chemicals. While my laboratory is an extremely safe place for students to learn, potential hazards still exist and safety is our top priority. These tools will allow students to work confidently while ensuring the safety of one of their most valued assets... their eyesight. Through the use of these tools, students will safely learn about the underlying principles that govern our living environment, such as, photosynthesis, diffusion, osmosis, cellular respiration and more.

Often times, student suffer the agony of supply and equipment shortages brought on by tight city school budgets.

Often times, due to a lack of proper or outdated eye protection, teacher demonstrations have replaced what should have been a hands-on activity . Your donation to this project will help my students to get busy in the lab... Safely!
