Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As an itinerant teacher in the Home Hospital Instructional Program, I teach some of the most vulnerable students in my community. I provide instruction to students in all grades, Pre-K through 13+, in all subject areas, from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, and whose lives may also be impacted by cognitive, physical, and emotional disabilities. In real terms what this means is that on any given day I can teach any subject from learning the names of letters and numbers, through Biology, and life skills.

Students who are assigned to my caseload have been diagnosed with either a catastrophic, chronic, or psychiatric illness which prevents the student from attending a regular school setting.

I provide instruction either in the student's home or the hospital, which requires that my "classroom" be mobile, as I travel across the county daily.

My students may suffer from illnesses such as sickle-cell anemia and asthma, potentially catastrophic conditions like organ transplants and cancer, or psychiatric diagnoses such as schizophrenia and depressive disorders.

In addition to the medical conditions which are central to the lives of my students, many of my students also have been identified with more commonly known disabilities.

My Project

The goal of this project is to utilize a technology device for virtual and in-person instruction so that my students may participate in the best possible educational experience in either format. As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic the entire teaching and learning relationship has changed. Given their underlying health conditions, the students on my caseload will continue to participate in the virtual setting even though the brick and mortar schools are open. For example, I could use a video format such as Skype or Zoom for instruction, Google Drive to create individual student folders for sharing assignments, resources, and collecting work. I can also use the tablet function, with the HP Pen, to share notes, important content vocabulary, or model problem solving in math. We could work jointly using graphic organizers, such as concept webs, to support the ability to organize and remember critical information in science, social studies, and electives such as art and music.

This project is innovative because it uses current technology, an HP Pavilion convertible laptop, to facilitate instruction for each student on my caseload on an individualized basis.

In addition to individualized methods of instruction, students will have the option of how they would like to share their work by sending an email or by submitting work through the website I have created specifically to address the challenges of remote teaching. Students, and their families, will be able to manage their end of remote learning in the formats which are most comfortable for them while I am able to manage my professional responsibilities in a structured fashion. Flexibility will be the key to improving the virtual learning experience and improving the overall perception of the experience for the families of my students.
