My Students

Grade Six is a very exciting, challenging, and identifying year for students. Children at this age are trying out different identities, figuring out who they are, and deciding what kind of learners they are going to be. They need to be inspired to make good choices and develop a love of learning!

My Sixth Graders are very energized students who are developing their own identities though out the year.

They inspire me to be a better teacher, and to challenge their minds with deep problem solving and exciting experiments. They love to learn through hands-on, inquiry based activities, but they also love to read! I am very proud to say that the Sixth Grade in my school is more that just a classroom and grade level, it is a team. The students have adopted a mentality that they are all responsible for everyone learning in the classroom. They share their opinions, encourage each other to do their best, assist struggling students, and cheer for each other’s successes. We do many team-building activities and community service learning in the school and the surround communities. My students come from very diverse backgrounds; many speak two languages, and come from all over the globe. My school is in an urban city close to Boston, with 52% of student receiving free lunch.

My Project

I am requesting sets of two books that I read each year to the students in my science class that complement the required state-wide science standards. Peak, by Roland Smith is about a 14-year-old boy, Peak, who has an opportunity of a lifetime, to climb Mt. Everest. He becomes reacquainted with his father on his trek up the mountain while learning about altitude and the challenges of survival. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly, is the story of an inquisitive 11-year-old girl, Callie-Vee, who is growing up in 1899, Texas. Her grandfather is one of the founding members of the National Geographic Society. The story follows Callie and her curiosity of the world around her, as she documents her observations in her scientific notebook and is able to come to her own conclusions, when she is refused the opportunity to check “Mr. Darwin’s Book” out of the library. Together Callie and her grandfather go on many explorations and in the end discover a new species of Vetch.

Each year I read these stories to my students and plan activities that relate to them, but each year we are faced with the challenge that I only have one copy of each book.

The students, and I, would love to have a copy for each of them to use to be able to access the story and be able to complete book projects and other activities. The students keep scientific notebooks like Callie, and learn about the terrain of mountains like Peak, and we would love to be able to do more with these stories.
